Abound Celebrates IDD Awareness Month with Spirit Week

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed March as Developmental Disabilities Month, marking a significant step towards recognizing and celebrating the achievements of individuals within the disability community. Over the years, this month has evolved into a crucial period for advocating for greater inclusion and understanding within our societies. At Abound Health, we are proud to join this celebration and amplify the voices of those we serve.

Spirit Week: A Week of Awareness and Unity

To honor Developmental Disabilities Month, Abound Health organized a Spirit Week from March 18 to March 22. Each day was dedicated to raising awareness for different diagnoses, and our team showed their support by wearing themed attire. Here’s a recap of our vibrant and meaningful week:

Monday, March 18: Wearing Green for Cerebral Palsy Awareness

We kicked off Spirit Week by donning green to support Cerebral Palsy Awareness. Cerebral Palsy is a group of disorders that affect a person’s ability to move and maintain balance and posture. By wearing green, we aimed to spread awareness and show solidarity with those affected by this condition.

Tuesday, March 19: Wearing Purple for Epilepsy Awareness

On Tuesday, our team wore purple to raise awareness for Epilepsy, a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. This day was dedicated to educating others about Epilepsy and supporting individuals who live with this condition.

Wednesday, March 20: Wearing Blue for TBI Awareness

Wednesday was all about Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Awareness. By wearing blue, we highlighted the challenges faced by individuals with TBI and emphasized the importance of support and rehabilitation for those affected.

Thursday, March 21: Rock Your Socks for Down Syndrome

Thursday was a fun and colorful day as we participated in the “Rock Your Socks” campaign for Down Syndrome Awareness. Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21. Wearing mismatched socks, we celebrated the uniqueness of individuals with Down Syndrome and promoted acceptance and inclusion.

Friday, March 22: Aloha Friday/Celebrating What Makes Us Different

We concluded Spirit Week with Aloha Friday, celebrating the diversity and uniqueness of everyone at Abound Health. This day was a joyful reminder that our differences make us stronger and more vibrant as a community.

A Time for Unity and Advocacy

Spirit Week at Abound Health was more than just themed attire; it was a powerful reminder of the importance of unity, togetherness, and advocacy. Each day, we came together to elevate the voices of those we serve and to promote a more inclusive society.

As we continue to celebrate Developmental Disabilities Month, let us remember the significance of these efforts and remain committed to supporting and empowering individuals with developmental disabilities. Together, we can make a difference and create a world where everyone is valued and included.

Thank you to everyone who participated in Spirit Week and helped make it a success. Let’s carry this spirit of awareness and inclusion throughout the year!
